Ouarzazate to Marrakech



Ait Ben Haddou

We left Ouarzazate early this morning for a long drive over the High Atlas Mountains. But before we started climbing, we had to stop to see the ancient site of Ait Ben Haddou. Any of you readers who were Game of Thrones fans probably recognize these city gates from that show.

This is a stop that is normally made on the tour, but, unfortunately for us, they are shooting the Tom Holland/Matt Damon movie “The Odyssey” at this site, so we could only see it from a distance. 

 


















There were many views along the narrow highway over the mountains to Marrakesh. It was a really long day on the bus, but we did see some very nice sights.

What a great day, despite the rain! Did a little gift shopping, saw some cool sights, finished with a nice dinner.

  Bonjour !  For any of you who have kept up with some of my adventures by reading one or more of my earlier travel blogs, here we go again .  As you may recall, I have traveled before with groups led by Georgia Lange , a former teaching colleague of mine who has become a travel agent specializing in small-group trips. I went with her group to France in 2022 , and again to Egypt in 2023 .  Both trips worked out quite well, so it sounded quite attractive when she sent out an email asking if anyone was interested in visiting Morocco. One Day, Four Cities

CASABLANCA We are starting our Sunday drive by visiting the port area of Casablanca. The large mosque I mentioned earlier, the Hassan II mosque, dominates the skyline of the second busiest port in Africa (Durban, South Africa is the busiest.) There is also an old lighthouse, built by the French, to let ships know where they were.   Part of the ancient Fort built by the  Portuguese in the 12th century Visiting McDonalds at our first rest area. Off to Casablanca

The entire process of getting here actually went pretty well. There was a bit of a mess at Tucson Airport because earlier flights to Dallas had been delayed and were still boarding when I arrived. My flight, though, was on time, so there were no issues getting to Dallas.  I was early, as I normally hate tight connections, so I had a couple hours to spend in the Dallas airport. I know it was a cold day outdoors in Dallas, but that was the most frigid damn terminal I have ever been in. I sat there reading my book, with just my shirt and a sweater, and was freezing to death. I had more clothes in my suitcase, but I had just checked that all the way through to Casablanca. I actually went into a couple of shops just to see if it was warmer in there. Flying premium economy sure makes the process of flying across the Atlantic a whole lot easier.
